Mardin is built on a hillside above the Mesopotamian plain, in tiers of pale limestone houses, mosques and church towers. It is one of the most atmospheric towns in the southeast, with a mix of Syriac Christian, Arab, Kurdish and Turkish heritage that shows in its monasteries, madrasas and food. Come for the views and the old town, and use it as a base for monasteries and ruins nearby.

What to see

The old town and its stone houses

Limestone is Mardin’s signature material, quarried locally, and it gives the houses their warm yellow or beige color. Very little wood is used apart from doors, window frames and mezzanines. Walk the main street early in the morning and again at dusk, and explore the stepped lanes behind it, where the best courtyards and doorways are.

Kasımiye Madrasa

Kasımiye is the largest of the old town’s historic buildings, with an open courtyard, a view over the Mesopotamian plain and astronomy and medicine symbols on its walls. Construction began in the Artuqid period and continued under the Akkoyunlu ruler Sultan Kasım, roughly 1487 to 1502. Go for the terrace view at sunset.

Deyrulzafaran Monastery

Deyrulzafaran is a Syriac Orthodox monastery just outside the town, one of the few places in the world where Aramaic is still used in services, and its name refers to the saffron grown around it. Dress modestly and ask before photographing inside.

Midyat and Mor Gabriel

Midyat has stone mansions, churches, monasteries and bazaars. Mor Gabriel Monastery nearby is described as the oldest standing Syriac Orthodox monastery in the world. Both sit in the Tur Abdin plateau, where Syriac Christian life continues.

Dara

Dara is an ancient city known for its necropolis, where Syriac, Zoroastrian and Turkish domed burials meet. It lies about 45 minutes from the city center by road.

Eating in Mardin

Expect meat-and-bulgur dishes such as içli köfte (kibbeh), flatbreads and kebabs, and sweets with almonds. Rooftop restaurants with plain views are the best setting for dinner. See our food guide.

Two nights in Mardin (suggested plan)

  • Day 1. Old-town walk in the morning, Kasımiye and the terraces, sunset over the plain.
  • Day 2. Deyrulzafaran Monastery in the morning, then Midyat and Mor Gabriel in the afternoon.
  • Day 3 (optional). Dara, then onward to Diyarbakır or Şanlıurfa.

When to go

Summers are hot, with highs above 35°C in July and August, and winters are cool and wet. Spring and autumn are the best seasons for walking the old town and visiting the monasteries.
