Diyarbakır is a city on the upper Tigris, ringed by a long black basalt wall. UNESCO inscribed the Diyarbakır Fortress and Hevsel Gardens Cultural Landscape in 2015, and the combination of fortress, gardens and river is what makes the city distinctive. It is a rewarding stop on the southeast route, with a lively old quarter, historic inns and strong food.

What to see

The walls and the İçkale

The basalt walls run for about 5,800 meters and are among the largest fortifications in the world, along with the İçkale, the inner citadel. UNESCO notes that the property is vulnerable, citing unauthorized settlement near the citadel and upstream dams. Walk a section of the wall for views over the Tigris valley, and go in the morning when it is cool.

The Hevsel Gardens

The Hevsel Gardens lie between the walls and the Tigris and supplied the city with fruit and vegetables until the 1960s. UNESCO calls them the city’s green lungs. They are good for a quiet walk.

The Ten-Eyed Bridge

The Dicle (Ten-Eyed) Bridge crosses the Tigris south of the city. An inscription dates it to 1065, and UNESCO gives 1064 to 1065, noting that some researchers think it may be older.

Hasan Pasha Inn and the Ulu Mosque

The Hasan Pasha Inn was begun between 1572 and 1575 under Vezirzade Hasan Pasha, and it is a common place for a long breakfast. The Ulu Mosque is described as one of the oldest mosques in Anatolia, with black stone walls and carved inscriptions. Both sit in the Sur district.

Food

Diyarbakır is known for hearty meat dishes, including stuffed lamb ribs (kaburga dolması), and for a long breakfast tradition in the old inns. The official culinary route links the city with Gaziantep and Şanlıurfa. See our food guide.

A day in Diyarbakır (suggested plan)

  • Morning. Breakfast at the Hasan Pasha Inn, then the Ulu Mosque and a walk along the walls.
  • Afternoon. Lunch in Sur, the Hevsel Gardens and the Ten-Eyed Bridge.
  • Evening. A walk through the old quarter at sunset.

When to go

Summers are among the hottest in the country, with July and August highs above 38°C. Winters are cold, with January lows below freezing. Spring and autumn are the best times to walk the walls.
