Göreme is the village at the center of Cappadocia, a cluster of cave houses and boutique hotels set in a fold of rock cones, with the Open Air Museum on its doorstep and valley trails running out in every direction. It is where most visitors sleep and where most balloon flights lift off. It suits anyone who wants to walk from the hotel to the valleys, and it is easy to base a three-night stay here.

What to see

Göreme Open Air Museum

This is a monastic complex made of small communities, each with its own church, listed with the rest of Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia by UNESCO in 1985. Many of the churches are painted with frescoes. Go at opening time to see the small churches without a queue. Check the current ticket and hours.

The valleys

Rose Valley, Red Valley and Love Valley are the classic walks, reached on foot from the village. They are best at sunrise and sunset, when the rock turns pink and orange, and in the heat of the day it is easy to lose time. Carry water and a map, and follow the paths.

Uçhisar and Zelve

Uçhisar has a rock citadel that serves as a viewpoint, and Zelve, the region’s second most visited open-air museum, is a valley of abandoned cave dwellings.

Balloon flights

Anadolu Agency reported 160 balloons run by 27 companies in July 2026, about 220 flight days a year on average. Flights depend on weather, and winter has few. Plan a spare morning, and ask your operator in writing what happens after a cancellation.

Underground cities

Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu, part of the UNESCO property, are underground refuges a short drive from Göreme. See our Cappadocia overview.

Three nights in Göreme (suggested plan)

  • Day 1. Arrive, walk Love Valley and watch the sunset.
  • Day 2. Balloon at dawn, then the Open Air Museum and a rest in the afternoon.
  • Day 3. Rose and Red Valley walk, then Uçhisar at sunset.

When to go

Göreme has a continental climate. Spring and autumn are the best seasons, summers are warm and dry, and winters are cold with snow. April to June have the most balloon flights.
