UNESCO sites Gobekli Tepe

Şanlıurfa, often called Urfa, is the best-known stop on the southeast route. It has Göbeklitepe, the Neolithic site that rewrote what we know about early religion, a sacred lake complex in the middle of the old city, a large museum complex, and the beehive houses of Harran nearby. It is also one of the hottest cities in the country in summer, so timing matters.

What to see

Göbeklitepe

Göbeklitepe is a site of round structures built around T-shaped stone pillars, dated to about 12,000 years ago and understood as ritual rather than domestic buildings. UNESCO added it to the World Heritage List in 2018. It predates farming and pottery, which is why it matters. Visit in the morning, take a guide or audio guide if the site offers one, and expect little shade.

Balıklıgöl

Balıklıgöl, also called Halil ur-Rahman Lake, is a complex of two lakes with mosques and madrasas around them. The fish are considered sacred, and the story of the lake’s origin is told as legend. The castle stands just to the south. It is a place of worship as well as a landmark, so dress modestly and keep a respectful distance from people praying.

Museums

The Şanlıurfa Archaeological Museum and the Haleplibahçe Mosaic Museum form a large museum complex. The Urfa Man statue, widely described as one of the oldest human statues in the world, is displayed here, and the mosaics show how rich the region was in Roman times.

The old bazaars

The covered bazaars, inns and lanes around the lake are the city’s commercial heart. Look for copper, textiles and the local isot pepper. See our bazaars and markets guide for bargaining.

Harran

Harran is known for its conical domed houses and for its past as a moon-god center in the Assyrian and Roman periods. It lies in the border region, so check government advice and a map before you plan the trip.

Food

Urfa’s table is built on kebab and spice. Urfa kebab is milder than Adana kebab, the local isot (Urfa pepper) is dark and smoky, and breakfast often means liver or lahmacun at a busy local place. The official culinary route links Şanlıurfa with Gaziantep and Diyarbakır. See our food guide.

Two days in Şanlıurfa (suggested plan)

  • Day 1. Göbeklitepe early in the morning, lunch in town, the museums in the afternoon, Balıklıgöl at dusk.
  • Day 2. The bazaars in the morning, and Harran if conditions allow, then onward to Mardin or Gaziantep.

When to go

Summers are extremely hot, with July and August highs near 39°C and almost no rain. Spring and autumn are far more comfortable for Göbeklitepe and Harran, and winters are mild but wet.
