Edirne is in Thrace, in the far northwest of Türkiye near the borders with Greece and Bulgaria. It was the capital of the Ottoman Empire before Istanbul, and it holds one of the great works of Ottoman architecture: the Selimiye Mosque, which UNESCO inscribed in 2011. It is a compact, walkable city with a strong food tradition, and an easy day or overnight trip from Istanbul.

What to see

Selimiye Mosque

The Selimiye Mosque was designed by the architect Sinan and built about 1568 to 1575 under Sultan Selim II. Sinan regarded it as his masterpiece. UNESCO describes a square mosque with a single great dome and four slender minarets that dominates the skyline. Inside, look at how the dome rests on eight piers and floods the space with light. The Archaeology and Ethnography Museum, opened in 1925, sits in the mosque’s courtyard. Dress modestly for the mosque.

The Old Mosque and the Selimiye Arasta Bazaar

The Old Mosque (Eski Camii) was built in 1403, and the Selimiye Arasta Bazaar beside it dates from 1590 and is still a working market. This is where to buy Edirne’s Kavala cookies, almond paste and other sweets.

Saraçlar Street, Kaleiçi and the Grand Synagogue

Saraçlar Street and the old Kaleiçi neighborhood are the best places for an unhurried walk. The Edirne Grand Synagogue, recently restored, is described as the largest in Türkiye.

Karaağaç and the Meriç

Karaağaç, with its old railway station and cafés, sits by the Meriç River. The Lausanne Monument, built in 1998, and its museum mark the Treaty of Lausanne and the return of Karaağaç to Turkish sovereignty. It is a good place to end the day.

Kırkpınar

The Kırkpınar oil wrestling festival, held each summer near Edirne, is on UNESCO’s intangible heritage list. Check the dates if you want to see it.

Eating in Edirne

Edirne is known for yaprak ciğer, thinly sliced fried liver eaten with Karaağaç dried peppers, Kavala cookies, almond paste, and hardaliye, a non-alcoholic grape drink from Thrace made with mustard seeds and cherry leaves. See our food guide.
