Bodrum is the Aegean’s most glamorous resort town, on a peninsula in Muğla province with a crusader castle at its harbor. It is the ancient Halicarnassus, birthplace of the historian Herodotus and site of the tomb of King Mausolus, one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world, and today it is known for white houses, a marina, beach bays and a busy summer nightlife. It works as a beach holiday, a boat holiday or a base for the peninsula’s quieter bays.

What to see

Bodrum Castle and the Museum of Underwater Archaeology

The castle was built in the 15th century by the Knights Hospitaller, and its towers and halls now house the Museum of Underwater Archaeology. The museum opened in 1964, has 14 exhibition salons and shows finds from local shipwrecks, and it received a Special Praise award in the European Museum of the Year competition in 1995. Allow half a day. Go in the morning, when it is cooler.

The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus

The tomb of the Carian satrap Mausolus once stood about 45 meters tall. Earthquakes toppled it between 1100 and 1400, and most of its marble was reused in Bodrum Castle. Little is left on site, so go for the story and the museum display.

Bays of the peninsula

The peninsula has a string of bays with different characters: Gümüşlük, Yalıkavak, Türkbükü, Göltürkbükü, Ortakent, Bitez and Akyarlar, with Aspat, Cennet and Iassos popular for boat stops. Gümüşlük and Yalıkavak suit sunset dinners, Bitez suits families, and Türkbükü and Göltürkbükü lean upmarket.

The Blue Voyage

The gulet holiday was introduced by Cevat Şakir Kabaağaçlı, the writer known as the Fisherman of Halicarnassus, who lived in Bodrum and popularized it first with Turkish readers and then worldwide. Ask any operator for a written quote showing the route, nights and inclusions.

Cruise port and Kos

The cruise port has 4 berths and a berthing line of 680 m, 1.5 km from the center. Bodrum is also a ferry port for the Greek island of Kos. Check the operator’s schedule and carry your passport.

A week in Bodrum (suggested plan)

  • Day 1. The castle and museum, then the marina and bazaar.
  • Day 2. A boat day to bays on the peninsula.
  • Day 3. Gümüşlük for a late lunch and sunset.
  • Days 4 to 7. Beach time, a gulet day trip or a day in Kos.

When to go

Bodrum has hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. May to June and September to October are the best months. July and August are hot and busy, and many seasonal businesses close in winter. MGM publishes statistics for the Muğla station, which is inland, so the coast differs a little.

Getting there and around

Milas-Bodrum Airport (BJV) is the gateway, and Dalaman is an alternative. Taxis, minibuses (dolmuş) and boats link the bays. See our getting around guide and Aegean coast guide.

Where to stay

Bodrum town is lively. Yalıkavak, Gümüşlük, Bitez and Türkbükü are quieter, and each has its own feel. See our where to stay guide.

Plan the wider trip

Bodrum pairs with Marmaris and İzmir. See our itineraries guide.
