Marmaris is a resort town on a deep, sheltered bay in Muğla province, and the main departure point for boat trips along the southwestern coast. It is lively in summer, with a marina, a castle above the harbor and beach resorts in nearby bays. For visitors who like the sea more than the town, it is also a practical base for gulet cruises, the Dalyan delta and the walking trails of the Datça and Bozburun peninsulas.

What to see and do
Marmaris Castle and the marina
The castle sits on a small peninsula behind the marina and now houses the Archaeology Museum. Its present form dates to the 16th century. Walk up for the view over the harbor, then follow the old bazaar streets back down to the waterfront.
Dalyan, Kaunos and İztuzu Beach
The classic day trip heads by boat to the Dalyan River Delta. The route passes the Kaunos rock tombs cut into the cliff and ends at İztuzu (Turtle) Beach, a long sandbar beach. Some tours add a mud bath. It is a full day, so ask the operator for pickup times, what is included and the return time. Dalyan lies roughly 100 km from Marmaris.
Bays and the Blue Voyage
A blue voyage is a gulet cruise along this coast. Marmaris routes pass Hisarönü Bay, Çiftlik Bay, Serçe Harbour, Bozukkale and Sedir (Cleopatra) Island, and Dalyan and Ekincik are the first bays on cruises towards Göcek. See our Mediterranean coast guide for cruise planning.
Selimiye, Bozburun and Datça
Selimiye and Bozburun are quieter beach settlements with cruise terminals, and Bozburun, a yacht town about 45 km southwest of Marmaris, is the base for a lazy few days. The Datça Peninsula and the Bozburun Peninsula are two sections of the Carian Trail, an 850 km walking route introduced in 2013 that also covers Gökova Bay and inner Caria.
Rhodes
Seasonal ferries connect Marmaris with the Greek island of Rhodes. Check the operator’s schedule and carry your passport.
A short break in Marmaris (suggested plan)
- Day 1. The castle, the bazaar and the marina promenade, with dinner on the waterfront.
- Day 2. A boat trip to Dalyan and İztuzu Beach.
- Day 3. A day at a bay beach or a boat trip along the coast.
- Day 4 (optional). Bozburun or Datça for a quieter second base.
When to go
Marmaris has hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. May to June and September to October are the best months, with warm sea and fewer crowds. July and August are hot and busy. Many seasonal businesses reduce service in winter, so check before you book. MGM publishes statistics for the Muğla station, which is inland, so the coast will differ slightly, but the pattern is the same.

Getting there and around
Dalaman Airport (DLM) is the main gateway, and Bodrum’s Milas airport is another option. Marmaris is a cruise port too, with ferries to Rhodes in season. In town, minibuses (dolmuş) and boats connect the bays. See our getting around guide.
Where to stay
Marmaris town puts you near the marina and nightlife. İçmeler and Turunç are quieter bay resorts, and Selimiye and Bozburun are small and calm. See our where to stay guide.
Plan the wider trip
Marmaris pairs with Fethiye and Bodrum on a coast route. See our itineraries guide and Aegean coast guide.
