Fethiye is a harbor town in Muğla province, ringed by pine-covered mountains and sitting at the head of a bay scattered with islands. It is the gateway to Ölüdeniz and its lagoon, to Babadağ paragliding, to the ghost village of Kayaköy and to the start of the Lycian Way. It is a working town with a marina and a market as well as a resort base, which makes it a good choice for visitors who want the sea without a purpose-built resort.

What to see

Ölüdeniz and the lagoon

Ölüdeniz is about 24 km from Fethiye. It has a protected lagoon and a white-sand beach of about 3 km between Belcekız and Kumburnu, and the water is warm and calm for about ten months of the year. The managed area is the Ölüdeniz Kıdrak Nature Park, run under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

Paragliding from Babadağ

Babadağ, a mountain of almost 2,000 meters behind Ölüdeniz, is the most popular paragliding site in Türkiye. Flights take about 30 minutes and land on the beach. Use a licensed operator, and ask about insurance and cancellation terms.

Kayaköy

Kayaköy lies on the road from Fethiye to Ölüdeniz. It is an abandoned village of stone houses on a hillside, quiet and moving, and a good morning stop.

The Lycian Way

The Lycian Way is Türkiye’s first long-distance walking route. It starts at Ölüdeniz and runs about 540 km to Geyikbayırı, west of Antalya, marked from start to finish and taking roughly a month for the whole route. Short sections near Fethiye make good day walks.

Boat trips and the bay

Boat trips from Fethiye harbor visit the islands of the bay. Ask operators for a written quote with the route, stops, lunch and return time. A blue voyage along the coast starts from here too. See our Mediterranean coast guide.

A week in Fethiye (suggested plan)

  • Day 1. Fethiye harbor, the marina and the market.
  • Day 2. Ölüdeniz beach and the lagoon.
  • Day 3. Paragliding in the morning, then Kayaköy in the afternoon.
  • Day 4. A boat trip around the bay.
  • Days 5 and 6. A section of the Lycian Way, or a day in Marmaris or Kaş.

When to go

Fethiye has hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. May to June and September to October are the best months, with warm sea and fewer people. July and August are hot and busy, and winter is wet. The figures below are for the Muğla station, which is inland, so the coast will differ a little.

Where to stay

Fethiye town has the widest choice, and Ölüdeniz is the beach resort, with guest houses, camping sites, motels and restaurants open all year. See our where to stay guide.
