UNESCO sites Goreme National Park and Rock Sites (1985)

Cappadocia is a region of central Anatolia carved by volcanoes and erosion into valleys of pale rock cones, cliffs and fairy chimneys, where people have cut houses, churches and whole underground cities into the stone for more than a thousand years. UNESCO inscribed Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia in 1985. It is also the world’s best-known ballooning destination, and one of the highlights of any Turkey trip. This is the regional overview. See Göreme for the main village and Kayseri for the gateway city.

What makes it special

The landscape is volcanic tuff, a soft rock laid down by ancient eruptions and carved by wind and water into the forms the region is famous for. Early Christian communities cut churches and monasteries into the rock, and underground cities such as Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu served as refuges, according to UNESCO, when communities banded together against Arab invasions. Today, cave houses are boutique hotels, valleys are walking routes, and the best views come from a balloon basket at dawn.

What to see

Göreme Open Air Museum

The Göreme Open Air Museum is a monastic complex made of small communities, each with its own rock-cut church, and many are painted with Byzantine frescoes. Go early, before the tour buses, and expect to share the small churches. Check the current ticket and hours.

Underground cities

Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu are part of the UNESCO property. Their narrow tunnels and rooms descend several levels, with stables, kitchens and storage. They are cool in summer and cramped for anyone who dislikes confined spaces.

Zelve and the valleys

Zelve is the most visited open-air museum in the region after Göreme, a valley with abandoned cave dwellings and churches. The valleys around Göreme, among them Rose, Red and Love, are the best walks, particularly at sunrise or sunset.

Uçhisar and Ürgüp

Uçhisar has a rock citadel that serves as a viewpoint over the valleys. Ürgüp is a larger town with wine, shops and quieter hotels.

Ihlara Valley

Ihlara is a long gorge with rock-cut churches and a river path, a half-day or full-day hike southwest of Göreme.

Hot air balloons

Ballooning is the reason many people come. Anadolu Agency reported in July 2026 that 160 balloons run by 27 companies operate in Cappadocia, with an average of about 220 flight days a year, depending on weather. It counted 754,098 visitors on balloon tours across 223 flight days in 2025. Flights are cancelled for wind, rain or low cloud, and January to June 2026 had only 90 flight days, with heavy rain and strong winds limiting flights.

The pattern is clear: April to June have the most flight days, and winter has few. Book your balloon for your first morning, so you have spare mornings if it is cancelled, and ask the operator in writing what happens after a cancellation, because there is no standard rule on refunds or rebooking. Operators set their own age, height and health limits. Our balloon guide follows.

Three nights in Cappadocia (suggested plan)

  • Day 1. Arrive and walk a short valley at sunset.
  • Day 2. Balloon at dawn, the Göreme Open Air Museum, an underground city in the afternoon.
  • Day 3. Ihlara Valley or Zelve, then Uçhisar at sunset.
  • Day 4. A spare balloon morning, then depart.

When to go

Cappadocia has a continental climate at about 1,000 meters: warm, dry summers and cold winters with snow, and a spring and autumn that are mild but unsettled. April to June and September to October are the best months for walking and ballooning. Winter is quiet and photogenic, with frost and snow, but it is cold.

Getting there and around

Most visitors fly to Kayseri (ASR) or Nevşehir (NAV) and transfer by road to Göreme. Others take overnight buses or fly into Ankara and drive. Once there, tours, taxis, rental cars and quad bikes cover the valleys. See our getting around guide.

Where to stay

Cave hotels are the main reason to stay in Göreme, Uçhisar or Ürgüp. Choose by area: Göreme is central and social, Uçhisar is quieter with big views, and Ürgüp is calmer and more upmarket. See our where to stay guide.

Plan the wider trip

Cappadocia pairs with Istanbul, Konya and Ankara. See our itineraries guide and best time to visit guide.
