Istanbul and the Marmara region

UNESCO inscribed the Historic Areas of Istanbul in 1985. We keep the detailed route, prices and closed days in a separate guide, so read things to do in Istanbul for a four day plan, and our Istanbul destination page for the wider picture.

Troy, near Çanakkale, shows nine layers of occupation spanning more than 3,000 years, according to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The ticket is 27 euros and also covers the Troy Museum. For Edirne and Bursa, see the destination pages.

Aegean coast

Ephesus was a major city of the ancient Mediterranean world. The Ministry says settlement there goes back to about 6,000 BC, and that it later became the capital of the Roman province of Asia. UNESCO inscribed it in 2015. It is open every day from 08:00 to 18:00, and the ticket is 40 euros. Izmir is the nearest large city. The trade-off is heat in July and August, when Izmir’s average high is 33.3°C. Read best time to visit Turkey before choosing your month.

Aphrodisias was inscribed by UNESCO in 2017 and costs 12 euros. Bodrum is covered on its destination page.

Mediterranean coast

Antalya, Fethiye and Alanya are the main coastal bases in our directory. Antalya has very little rain from June to September, under 17 mm a month on average, and highs of 30.8°C in June and 34.2°C in July. The catch is the heat, and winter is wet: December averages 250.9 mm.

The Ministry says there are between 150 and 200 underground cities in the region, and Kaymaklı is one of them (13 euros). Ihlara Valley is described as one of the world’s largest canyons, 14 km long, and costs 15 euros. Our Göreme page covers the town.

In Konya, the core of the Mevlana Dervish Lodge is the shrine of Mevlana, built in 1274. The museum is open every day from 09:00 to 17:00. Safranbolu has a museum that is closed on Mondays.

Southeast and east Turkey

Göbeklitepe, 15 km northeast of Şanlıurfa according to the Ministry, was first identified as an archaeological site in 1963. The ticket is 20 euros and also covers Karahantepe. See Şanlıurfa for the city.

Mount Nemrut is a UNESCO World Heritage Site at an altitude of 2,150 meters. It has a tumulus over the tomb of King Antiochus I of Commagene. The ticket is 10 euros, and opening hours may vary with sunrise and sunset.

Summers here are very hot. Diyarbakır’s average high is 38.5°C in July and 38.3°C in August, while April and October are milder at 20.5°C and 25.4°C. See Mardin, Gaziantep and Diyarbakır for the cities.

Black Sea coast

Sümela Monastery sits on steep cliffs on the slopes of Karadağ in the Altındere Valley, according to the Ministry. It is open every day from 08:00 to 17:00 and costs 20 euros. See Trabzon for the area. Trabzon has rain on 8 to 13 days in every month, and October is the wettest at 113.4 mm, so pack for showers.

How to combine places

Turkey is large, so pick two or three regions rather than trying to see everything. Possible combinations are Istanbul with Cappadocia, Istanbul with the Aegean coast and Pamukkale, or the Mediterranean coast with Cappadocia. Our itineraries guide and getting around Turkey cover routes and transport. For costs, see the Turkey travel budget guide. For Pamukkale timing, see our Pamukkale guide.

What is not ideal about each region

  • Istanbul: the best known sights close on set days, and prices are set in lira or euros.
  • Aegean and Mediterranean coasts: hot in July and August, and wet in winter.
  • Cappadocia: balloon flights can be cancelled by weather, and winter nights fall below freezing.
  • Southeast: very hot in July and August.
  • Black Sea: rain in every month.
