Safranbolu is a small town in Karabük province whose old center is one of the best-preserved Ottoman towns in Türkiye. UNESCO inscribed the City of Safranbolu on the World Heritage List in 1994 as a typical Ottoman city that played a key role in the caravan trade. It takes its name from saffron, once grown in the area, and today it is known for its timber-framed houses, its bazaar and its Turkish delight.

What to see
The old town
The Çarşı is the historic center, a market district typical of an Anatolian town. About 2,000 traditional houses survive from the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries, and about 800 of them are under legal protection. UNESCO notes that the rooms of these houses open onto a central hall called a sofa, which shaped family life. The town has been a protected area since 1975. The pleasure here is walking, so give yourself a slow morning.
The Demirciler Bazaar
The Demirciler Bazaar, in the old market, has kept its Ottoman look, and the shops sell crafts, copper and local sweets. Look for saffron and for Safranbolu’s lokum, which is often made on site.
Mansions and the mosque
The Köprülü Mehmed Pasha Mosque, built in 1661, anchors the market, and the Cinci Han, a 17th-century caravanserai, still takes guests. A restored mansion such as the Kaymakamlar House gives a view of how families lived. Stay in one of the restored mansion hotels if you can, since this is the main reason to sleep here.
Yörük Village
Yörük Village is about 11 km from Safranbolu. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism placed it under conservation in 1997, and it has 93 registered monuments dating back to the 16th century. It is a quieter, smaller model of the old town.
İncekaya Aqueduct
The İncekaya Aqueduct crosses a canyon outside town, and a glass viewing platform 80 m up offers views down the valley. It is a short stop and best on a clear day.
A night in Safranbolu (suggested plan)
- Afternoon. Arrive, check in to a mansion hotel, and walk the old town and bazaar.
- Evening. Dinner in the Çarşı and an evening stroll when the day visitors have left.
- Morning. Yörük Village or İncekaya, then onward to Ankara or Istanbul.
When to go
Safranbolu has four seasons. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable for walking, summers are warm, and winters are cold with some snow. The Karabük station shows about 7 to 9 rainy days a month in spring.
