Pamukkale is the white travertine hillside above the Büyük Menderes valley in southwestern Türkiye, with the ancient spa city of Hierapolis on top of it. The terraces are formed by calcium-rich thermal water, and the combination of natural and ancient is why UNESCO listed the site in 1988. It is a one-day stop on most itineraries, easy to pair with Ephesus or the Aegean coast. This page is the destination overview. For hours, tickets and rules in detail, read our Pamukkale thermal pools guide.

What to see
The travertine terraces
The white terraces are the reason people come. You walk the terraces barefoot, since shoes are not allowed on the white travertine, and the pool area is open to visitors. Go early or late in the day for softer light and fewer people. Bring sunglasses, since the glare is strong.
Hierapolis
Hierapolis was founded by Eumenes II of Pergamon in the 2nd century BC. Most of the surviving buildings date from after the earthquake of AD 60, and the city became a Christian center from the 4th century, when the Martyrium of St Philip was built. The main street runs for about 1 km, and the necropolis is the largest in southwest Anatolia. Highlights include the Roman theater, the Temple of Apollo, the Plutonium and the Nymphaeum. Allow at least two hours.
The Antique Pool
The Antique Pool, often called Cleopatra’s Pool, is a thermal pool with sunken Roman columns. It charges a separate fee, and the pool area has been open to visitors in a temporary arrangement, so check the current rules.
Hierapolis Archaeological Museum
The museum occupies the ancient Roman bath, gymnasium and library, and it is open daily from 08:00 to 17:30, with the box office until 17:00. It shows finds from Hierapolis, Laodikeia and Tripolis, and the ticket is 30 euros (Ministry, October 2026).
Karahayıt and nearby sites
Karahayıt, a few kilometers away, is known for its red-colored thermal springs. Laodikeia and Tripolis are nearby archaeological sites listed by the Ministry.
A day in Pamukkale (suggested plan)
- Early morning. The travertines, before the tour groups arrive.
- Mid-morning. Hierapolis, with the theater and the main street.
- Midday. The Antique Pool or the museum, then lunch.
- Late afternoon. The necropolis and sunset on the terraces, if you are staying overnight.
When to go
Pamukkale is inland, with hot summers and cold, wet winters. April to June and September to October are the most comfortable months. July and August highs reach about 35°C, with strong glare off the white stone, so go very early or late.
