Ankara is Türkiye’s capital, a planned city on the Anatolian plateau and the seat of government since the Republic was founded in 1923. It has none of Istanbul’s skyline or the coast’s beaches, and most visitors skip it. That is a mistake if you care about history: Ankara has the best museum of ancient Anatolia in the country, the mausoleum of the Republic’s founder, and a citadel quarter with restored Ottoman houses.

What to see

Museum of Anatolian Civilizations

The museum sits on the south side of Ankara Castle and occupies two Ottoman buildings, the Mahmut Pasha Bedesten and the Kurşunlu Han. Its collection runs in chronological order from the Paleolithic onward, so you walk through Anatolia’s history in sequence. The highlights include a Hittite stela of the goddess Kubaba, the Gate Lion, the statue of King Mutallu and the figures of the Phrygian goddess Kybele. Plan two to three hours, and check the museum’s opening days before you go.

Anıtkabir

Anıtkabir is the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, on Anıttepe in the center of the city. The complex covers about 750,000 square meters and includes the Atatürk and War of Independence Museum, which tells the story of the Republic’s founding. It is a national memorial and a place of formal respect: dress modestly, keep your voice down and follow the guards’ instructions. Allow two hours, and check current visiting rules on the day.

Ankara Castle

The castle began as a garrison and has been used by many civilizations. Inside the walls, the old quarter has restored Ottoman houses, some of them now cafés and restaurants. It makes a good pairing with the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in a single morning.

Hamamönü

Below the castle, Hamamönü is a restored neighborhood of Ottoman houses, with cafés and craft shops and a museum of Anatolian traditions opened in 2013. It is the best place for a slow lunch or evening tea.

A day in Ankara (suggested plan)

  • Morning. Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, then walk up through the castle quarter.
  • Midday. Lunch in Hamamönü.
  • Afternoon. Anıtkabir, with time for the museum.
  • Evening. Dinner around Kızılay or Tunalı Hilmi, where the modern city lives.

With a second day, take the high-speed train to Konya for the Mevlana Museum, or build in a visit to Safranbolu.

When to go

Ankara has a continental climate: hot, dry summers and cold winters with frost and occasional snow. April to June and September to October are the best months. Winter is cold, with January lows below freezing.

Getting there and around

Ankara is a rail, road and air hub. Esenboğa Airport has domestic and international flights, and the high-speed train (YHT) links the city to Istanbul, Konya and Eskişehir. Buses reach almost everywhere. Within the city, the metro and buses cover the main sights. See our getting around guide.

Where to stay

Ulus is closest to the castle and the museum. Kızılay is the commercial center, and Çankaya has embassies, quieter streets and good restaurants. See our where to stay guide.

Plan the wider trip

Ankara fits between Istanbul and Cappadocia on a rail-and-bus route. See Konya, Safranbolu and Cappadocia, and our itineraries guide.
