Turkey Visa Requirements: What Official Sources Say
Whether you need a visa for Turkey depends on your passport. The UK and Canadian governments both say their citizens can visit Turkey for tourism or business for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a Turkey visa. Other nationalities should check their own government’s travel advice and the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs before booking.
Updated 17 October 2026. We removed earlier statements that UK, US, Australian and Canadian citizens must buy a $50 e-visa. The UK and Canadian governments say their citizens do not need a visa for short tourist stays, and we could not verify the other claims on an official page. Fees, validity and processing times change, so we no longer quote them here.
What the UK and Canadian governments say
- United Kingdom: the UK government says British citizens with a full British citizen passport can visit Turkey without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, for business or tourism. Other British passport types need a visa. Source: GOV.UK foreign travel advice for Turkey, entry requirements.
- Canada: the Government of Canada says no visa is needed for tourist stays of up to 90 days in a 180-day period. Work, business, student and medical stays need a visa, and remote workers need a digital nomad visa. Source: Canada travel advice for Türkiye, last updated 29 September 2026.
Other nationalities
Rules differ by passport. If you hold a United States, Australian, European or other passport, check your own government’s travel advice page for Turkey and the website of the Turkish embassy or consulate in your country before you book.
When you need a Turkey visa
Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes the e-visa system as for tourism or commerce, and says work, study and other purposes need a visa from a Turkish embassy or consulate. The UK and Canadian governments give the same advice for work, study and medical stays.
Using the official e-visa system
If your nationality needs a visa for a short visit, you apply online for an e-visa. The Government of Canada advises applying only through the official Government of Türkiye site, and warns that third-party sites may charge extra fees and do not act for the Turkish government.
We do not quote e-visa fees, validity or processing times, because they depend on nationality and change. Check them on the official system before you pay. Start from your own government’s travel advice or the Turkish embassy website, which link to the official system.
Passport validity
The UK and Canadian governments both say your passport must be valid for at least 150 days after the day you arrive, and have blank pages for entry stamps. Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs says a passport must be valid for at least 60 days beyond the authorized stay, which is 150 days for a 90-day stay, and advises six months from arrival. Airlines can apply stricter rules, so six months is the safest.
Staying longer than 90 days
The Government of Canada says stays beyond 90 days need a residence permit from the Provincial Directorate of Migration Management, and that processing can take months. It also says that to get another 90-day visa-exempt stay you must first leave Türkiye for at least 90 days. Count your days carefully against the rule of 90 days in any 180.
